Hair Loss

Symptoms & Treatment Information.

Normal Hair Loss: Approximately 90 percent of one's head hair is in a continual on-growing phase that lasts between two to six years. The other 10 percent remains in a inactive state for a period of between two to three months at the end of which it enters a shedding stage (50-100 hairs per day is normal).  The shredded hair is replaced by new hair from the same follicles positioned beneath the scalp surface and grows at a rate of about one to one and a half inch per month.

Excessive Hair Loss:  Approximately half of the population experience, through to age 50, a normal loss of hair. Abnormal hair loss however can be due to a number of causes so where you notice larges amounts of hair coming out and the hair generally thinning or after brushing or combing then you should visit a health professional for advice.

Some Factors Related To Hair Loss

Insufficient Protein In Diet: An adequate amount of protein intake is necessary to maintain normal hair production. Protein is found in such foods as meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, beans, nuts and grains. Where protein intake is insufficient the body attempts to save on protein by placing hairs into an inactive static state that over a period of a few months can result in heavy shedding of hair. An increased protein intake can reverse the hair loss.

Iron deficiency:  An Iron deficiency can sometimes produces hair loss. Such deficiency can be identified and corrected by medication.

Medication: For some people, prescription drugs can cause a  temporary hair shedding. Obviously, if you are taking any prescription drugs whether short term or ongoing then check with your health professional for advice.

Birth Control Pills: In the case of women who start to lose hair when taking birth control pills there is usually a inherited predisposition to hair thinning.

Pregnancy & Childbirth. After birth of baby a larger than normal proportion of the woman's hair will enter the inactive (static) stage. Therefore within a couple of months following birth some women may experience larger than normal amounts of hair coming out when combing or brushing the hair.

Common Baldness:  Usually refers to male-pattern baldness which is the most common cause of hair loss in males and is generally an inherited trait. Males who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness and their hair loss typically results in a receding hair line and baldness on the top of the head.

Women may also develop female-pattern baldness where the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp.

Cancer Chemotherapy: Some types of drugs used in  Chemotherapy treatment will cause hair cells to stop dividing. The hair will become thin and break off within one to three weeks after treatment. The patient might lose up to 90 percent of their head hair however, the hair can re-grow after the end of the treatment.

Influenza & Infections: More than normal hair loss can result for some people after suffering from Influenza, a severe infection and/or high fever. The effect can take place within three months of illness and will usually correct itself. If not then professional health help should be sought.

Shock: Any major shock to the bodies system (i.e. surgery) can cause an increase in the shedding of hair within a couple of months that will ultimately rectify itself.

Thyroid:  Hair loss can be caused due to an over or under active thyroid and can be reversed with proper treatment.

Alopecia:  Androgenic Alopecia is a common type of hair loss where the hair thins from the front of the head moving progressively to back and top of the head. There is no definite known cure although there are treatments available dependent on the cause of the condition. In the event that hair loss is caused by a temporary condition i.e. stress, iron deficiency, medication etc then early treatment may prove effective.

With Alopecia Areata the hair falls out leaving smooth round patches.

Traction Alopecia:  can be caused through use of very tight "hair rollers" or "pigtails" The pull on your hair can cause scarring on the scalp and scarring can cause permanent hair loss. Where the pulling effect is stopped prior to any scarring on the scalp then the hair will grow back normally.

Hair Loss Treatments: There are several medicinal treatments available for hair loss that can be applied to the scalp and you should seek health professional advice before embarking upon any such treatment.

Other alternatives are "Hair Transplants" - "Wigs" - "Partial Hairpieces" and a good hair stylist can often very successfully camouflage thinning hair areas.

Treatments are available dependant upon your type of hair loss. Where a medication is causing your hair loss then your health professional (doctor) may be able to prescribe a different medication. Identifying and treating an infection may also help stop the hair loss as with correcting a hormone imbalance.
